Joy, Regardless

Lara Charles

A powerful memoir about embracing the unknown, reclaiming the feminine and rediscovering the wholeness that’s been hidden in your heart all along. On the outside, Lara Charles had everything she was supposed to need; but inside, a quiet ache left her longing for more. Then life gave her more . . . just not in the way she expected. One curveball (or two) later, Lara is forced to confront the inner beliefs and societal scripts that had kept her feeling ‘good’ but never truly whole. With raw honesty and a touch of humour, Lara invites readers on a transformative journey guided by ancient wisdom and wise souls – one that’s less about escaping to expensive meditation retreats and more about uncovering your true self in the thick of everyday life. Because true joy isn’t found elsewhere – it’s found, regardless.

No Regrets: Cobber's Favourite Bush Poems and Yarns

Keith 'Cobber' Lethbridge

This book is a compilation of Cobber’s favourite bush poems and yarns written between 1963 and 2024. The yarns were written in the East Kimberley between early-1963 and mid-1967. During that time, Cobber worked as a farmhand at the Kimberley Research Station. They were interesting times filled with amazing characters. The yarns and the verses in this book give a snapshot of the history of Western Australia through the eyes of a very ordinary bloke who just happened to be there at the time. Put the Billy on the fire, grab a seat, and have a gander through the pages of this book. You won’t regret it.

Silenced

Ann Robertson

Ann Robertson grew up in the 1940s in a conservative, controlling society. Although a fearful and anxious child, Ann enjoyed the simple things in life - making cubbies under her bed with her sister Janet, keeping silkworms in a shoebox, and picking fruit with her family. But the threads of alcoholism, secrets, lies, anger, guilt, blame and controlling parenting would always be present, and Ann’s voice silenced. In 1949, the Robertson family moves to Albany, and after High School, Ann begins working life as an office junior, but fear and depression weigh heavily on her. When she and Janet move back to Perth, Ann meets John Marsh at a local dance. They later marry and move to Cronulla, NSW, but after the birth of her second son in 1963, Ann suffers a nervous breakdown and again experiences being ‘silenced’, both within the mental health system and her family. In 1975, John’s alcoholism finally takes its toll and Ann leaves the marriage, taking their two children back to Perth to start afresh. Realising then she is attracted to difficult, alcoholic men, Ann sets about looking for answers and in 1986, finds her way to Al Anon - a support group for people badly affected by alcoholism in a family member or friend. She is still a member. Ann has written these short, simple reflections on her life hoping they will resonate with others and encourage them to seek help to find their voice.

Animals Can Talk

KJ Harding

Sophie stopped in her tracks. She stared at the little group of animals and they in turn, simply stared back. Sure enough, just as Mummy had described, there was a kangaroo, a koala, a cassowary, and a bush turkey. Sophie looked up as a flutter of feathers wafted to the ground. High in the trees she caught a glimpse of a galah. It was Rocky-Ali who broke the silence. “Greetings, friends.” “Greetings,” replied the odd little group of animals. “Is this her?” inquired the koala in a hushed voice. ~~~ “This is the best book I have ever read! (Although I did think that Koala character was a bit serious)” -Koala, c/- Gum Tree 27 Rainforest Glen. “I simply could not put this book down, so I have kept a copy in my pouch” -Karoo the Kangaroo

Olives, Oil & Toil

Compiled by Maggie Edmonds

The Olive Industry in all its forms is exciting and seductive. It entices growers, attracts researchers, beckons retailers and lures food lovers. Growers decide to grow olives for a variety of reasons. As with any agricultural endeavour, olive farmers (or most of them) grow olive trees to make olive oil or produce table olive products to earn a profit. Sometimes that ambition works out… sometimes it just becomes a labour of love. Olive growers are often people looking at the spectre of retirement and concluding that growing olives would suit that timeframe of their lives. Others are younger families where the country lifestyle fits in with their plans. Often, family traditions are upheld. Olive tree growing can be tucked alongside other crops, such as mangoes or avocados – these ancient trees don’t need you 24/7. Connection to the land is a large pull. Costs from the growing process are a tax deduction. The challenge of producing olive oil or table olives to share and sell is inviting to some. ‘Big’ players in The Olive Industry have come and gone, whereas small scale olive growers continue to serve consumers and support local communities. This book contains the reflections and experiences of people who have toiled in and around The Olive Industry. They combined to revitalise the Industry in Western Australia, 1995-2020. As Professor Stan Kailis writes in the first chapter of this book, The Mediterranean Diet-the doorway to living healthier and longer, “This is only possible where extra virgin olive oil together with natural foodstuffs underpin the daily pattern of the diet.”
